She steps into the role of group leader having been deputy leader since 2022 and Nia has also taken on the role of interim leader at Cyngor Gwynedd since former leader, Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn stepped down from his role in mid-October.
Councillor Nia Jeffreys said: "It is a great privilege to lead the group of councillors in Gwynedd. I am extremely grateful to the group for the trust they have shown in me. I'm looking forward to working with them and getting on with the job in hand to benefit the people of Gwynedd."
“I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the former leader, Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn for his work and service to local government in recent years. I'm looking forward to tackling the new role with vigour and enthusiasm."
Cyngor Gwynedd will meet on Thursday 5 December, where all council members will elect a new leader for Cyngor Gwynedd. Gwynedd's cabinet led by Nia Jeffreys will continue in its role until the new leader is appointed on the 5th of December.
Plaid Cymru Gwynedd is the largest group on the council, with 46 members in the group. In the 2022 election, the highest ever percentage of Plaid Cymru councillors were elected to Gwynedd since its formation in 1996, namely 64% of the councillors. More young councillors were elected than ever before and there were more women in the ranks of the group ensuring a better representation of our communities.
