Time for Westminister to give Wales the first of March as a national bank holiday

“It’s high time that the Government in Westminster gave the Welsh Government the right to designate March the first as an official national holiday. It feels that we, as a country, do not have the right to recognise St David as the Patron Saint of Wales, because of the arrogance and shackles placed upon us by the Westminster Government.”

This was the statement made by Plaid Cymru Councillor Elwyn Edwards, Llandderfel at full council (3 October) as he successfully secured the support of Cyngor Gwynedd councillors to put pressure on the Westminster government to give the Senedd the right to designate March the first as an official national holiday.

“I make no apologies for raising this issue yet again in the chamber today. The Saints of Scotland and Northern Ireland receive full recognition from their nations, by marking the day an official national holiday. Is Wales not important enough to be given the right to decide for ourselves?”

“The Tories indifference to this issue over the years has been cutting. We know that the Welsh Government has stated its support for our calls in the past. It is now time for the Labour Government across both governments to give us, as a nation, the right to decide for ourselves how we mark this notable occasion in our annual calendar.

“There have been plenty of promises made from the Labour party on several issues over the years. Now that they govern at both Cardiff and Westminster, surely they will finally honour their vows and grant a national bank holiday for the nation on the first of March?”

“We call for the support of all county, town and community councils in Wales to work with us and the Welsh Government to push Westminster for change by the first of March 2025.”

Plaid Cymru Gwynedd Councillor, Elwyn Edwards presented the notice of motion to full council and it successfully passed.
