Ysgol Hafod Lon visitor thanks staff for their care and dedication

A visitor was welcomed to Ysgol Hafod Lon, Penrhyndeudraeth recently, one of Gwynedd’s two special educational needs schools in the county. Councillor Paul Rowlinson, Gwynedd cabinet education leader came to see the pupils and staff who offer education for pupils from 3 to 19 years of age with additional learning needs. thanks to an invite by the chair of governors at Ysgol Hafod Lon, Councillor Gwynfor Owen.

“We received a very warm welcome from everyone,” said Plaid Cymru Councillor, Paul Rowlinson, "it was a pleasure and a privilege to see the work that everyone is doing at the school which has a long history within the county of offering invaluable experiences to the pupils and their families.

"I also had the opportunity to discuss the challenges facing the special education sector with headteacher, Donna Roberts (pictured with Cllrs Gwynfor Owen and Paul Rowlinson) and deputy, Deio Brunelli.

Hafod Lon moved to the current building in 2016, and the number of pupils has increased over the period with the intensity of the children's needs having also evolved.

“It was great to meet some of the staff and thank them for the care and dedication they give to the pupils in order to ensure a happy and effective school that complies with the requirements of the curriculum. The school’s work promotes the pupils' independence and prepares them for the future,” explains Cllr Paul Rowlinson.

"Every school today faces challenges but of course the additional needs sector faces very specific challenges. We as a Council take our duty for this sector seriously and continue do everything we can to facilitate and assist the staff, the pupils and their families," said Cllr Paul Rowlinson.

"In Westminster Government’s budget two weeks ago, the Chancellor allocated £1 billion for special educational needs and disabilities in England, recognising the increased pressure on the sector. As our attention now turns to the Welsh Government's budget, it is more important than ever to ensure that our schools in Wales receive the resources they need.”

Councillor Gwynfor Owen, chair of governors at Ysgol Hafod Lon added: “I was pleased to be able to welcome the education cabinet member to the school. We appreciate his time and for confirming the council’s commitment as we continue to seek the best for the children and their families here at Hafod Lon.”
