Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn was re-elected Leader of the Plaid Cymru Gwynedd Councillors' Group at a meeting in Porthmadog last night (8 May 2022). Dyfrig Siencyn, County Councilor for the Dolgellau North Ward, has been successful in his role as Group Leader and Leader of Cyngor Gwynedd for the past five years.
In the May 5th elections, Plaid Cymru Gwynedd secured a clear majority in order to continue to lead the county council over the next five years. The highest ever percentage of Plaid Cymru Councilors were elected to Gwynedd since the formation of the Council in its current form in 1996: 64% of all councillors.
Plaid will have 44 Councillors in Gwynedd Council wards, an increase from Plaid's figure of 41 following the 2017 Election.
Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn said:
"It is a honour and privilege to be re-elected as Plaid Cymru Gwynedd Group Leader - I am grateful to the people of Dolgellau for my re-election and to the members of the Plaid Group for putting their faith in me. It is an important job that sets the foundation for the excellent work that is done in Gwynedd by a whole team of Councillors, staff, MPs, Senedd Members, volunteers and communities. Plaid Cymru has a significant vision and contribution to make, not only to the future of this county, but also to the future of Wales and the Welsh language.
"We extend a warm welcome to the 19 new Plaid Cymru Councillors. It’s positive to see that so many women are now part of our team (19) and also that we have more young faces than ever before. There is a positive feeling amongst the Group; lots of new blood, enthusiasm and new ideas – but also a great deal of experience - I'm really looking forward to making sure that the voice of every member of our team is heard. The Plaid group will nominate Councillor Dyfrig Siencyn to the post of Leader of Cyngor Gwynedd at the full Council meeting in Caernarfon on Thursday 19 May 2022.
